XTORK launched the first skim boarding competition in Qatar on the 20th of January 2017 at Wakrah’s golden beach.
On an early Friday morning, XSkimboarding kicked off with 15 interested participants. XSkimboarding is the first ever skim boarding competition to be held in Doha, Qatar. The event kicked off on Al- Wakrah Public Beach on the 20th of January 2017. A crowd had gathered to watch the men brave the elements with a beautiful background of kites being flown high up in the sky all whilst under the Red Bull shades. The first challenge of the event was the weather itself; freezing winds and cold water had already taken a toll on a few of the participants; all but a few. The event had two categories the “Best Ride” and the “Longest Ride”.
The “Longest Ride” category ran for 30 minutes for each participant, allowing the participants to ride as many times as long as it’s their turn. The longest ride was recorded for each participant and later ranked with others. For the “ Best Ride” category, participants had a one-on-one showdown. They were encouraged to showcase their best tricks and freestyle riding in front of the judges. Winners of each round were advanced up to the finals. The display of a combination of athleticism and sheer will power to face the elements was a spectacle for a never before seen sport here in the region. Though well known in other parts of the world, it has been gaining momentum in the region too. After a fun filled day, we had crowned our winners in the two categories.
Leomore Morana, who was crowned first place in both categories, describes the experience as “ fun, unique, and full
of good vibes”. Leomore started skim boarding in 2007 in the Philippines, where he enjoyed his summers kicking back and skim boarding. Leomore believes in the potential of growth that skim boarding has to offer in Doha. He says “ because we have amazing beaches here, flatland skim boarding will definitely progress with the planning of right events and competitions.”
The competition faced challenges with the weather, but that did not stop our competitors.
