Every ridden wave is a story—some say that surfing is about leaving, some say it is finding. But for us, it is about the search. In a two robust vehicle convoy, the Xtork team drives the All-New Mitsubishi Montero Sport and the 2016 Mitsubishi Pajero GLS in a two-day initial attempt to find surfing waves in Qatar.
We set off on a Friday and started our journey up north, the first of our three stops being Fuwairit Beach. The temperature was 33 degrees celsius. It was low tide at 0.62 meters with barely a wave, but we loved the clear waters and somewhat secluded ambience. To get to Fuwairit, you’ll need a 4×4.
From Fuwairit, we decided to head to Dukhan. Enjoying the ride, a tunnel under the main highway has caught our attention, making us decide on a detour. The Montero
It was windier on our way to Dukhan. Reaching the beach at past four in the afternoon, it was 32 degrees celsius with the wind blowing at 10kph—good enough to kite surf. Alas, on another season (which seems to be on its way), there seems to be hope in Dukhan. There were waves, but barely half a meter high. The fleeting waves mildly struck the rocks and shore as we watched the crowd of families and friends, delighting with a myriad of activities in the coast.
We decided to continue with our journey to Umm Bab where we would set-up camp, watch out for the sunset and, of course…the waves.
It only takes an average of six seconds for surfers to ride a wave, and waves of a lifetime happen only once in a while. We’ve heard confirmed rumors, and our motto does not include the words giving up. We love the hunt. And, if surfing is possible elsewhere in the Middle East, why couldn’t it be in Qatar?
