Subtitle: Since XTORK started, we have tried to showcase different angles of the extreme sports scene here in Qatar. In this feature, we are going a little bit more personal. Meet Bernard Interno, a 33-year-old Filipino BMX rider, in other words, the BMX Beast.
How did it all start?
Bernard’s interest in sport came from a very young age. He always tried to engage himself in any kind of sports, varying from basketball to billiard back in the Philippines. As the days went one, extreme sports intrigued him. He started experimenting with different types of rides, but one thing stuck, BMX riding. “ I find that riding a BMX is not only thrilling, but is inspiring in a sense that it a great way to get to know yourself, especially in your teenage years.”
In 2002, when Bernard was in high school, he took his first ride on a BMX. He wanted to give it a shot, since his brother used to ride frequently. “ At first, I had no idea how to balance the bike, ride the bike, use its break.” The person who was always by side his and helping him advance his skills was his brother, “I give my gratitude to my brother, who helped me out every step of the way until I was able ride by myself, he is most definitely my inspiration!”
BMX in the streets of Qatar
Through BMX, Bernard made a network and is still growing till today. “ The beauty of this network is that some of us are actually professional riders and some just do it for the thrill, and when we get together, we give each other advice and help each other out with new tricks.”
Bernard’s favorite spots to ride in Doha include a disclosed area by The Center in Al-Sadd and MIA Park in Al-Corniche.
To Bernard, XTORK brings a new level of excitement and inspiration to all extreme sports enthusiasts in Qatar. “We need more recognisition in Qatar, you would be surprised by how many people here are interested in extreme sports but need a little push.” He believes that with XTORK growing, it will encourage more and more people from the local community to enjoy extreme sports freely!
To the BMX community in Qatar, Bernard would like to say a few words:
“I want to tell to my co-BMX riders here in Qatar to always maintain our network. As we grow, we slowly encourage more and more people to join our thrill and that to me, is a great way of giving back to the community.”
