ONCE IN A WHILE, A HANDFUL OF PEOPLE WOULD STAND OUT FROM THE REST BY GOING AGAINST THE GRAIN OR BECAUSE OF THEIR INNATE INDIVIDUALITY. SUCH ARE DOHA RESIDENTS 21-YEAR OLD TALA BASSEM ANABTAWI AND 29-YEAR OLD HEBA RAHMAN, WHO ARE BOTH PASSIONATE ABOUT SKATEBOARDING.
Ever since I got my current skateboard, which is actually my first, I went on a journey of skating with Doha’s skaters. My skateboard acted as a gateway to this world,” pointed out Tala who is a part time programmer taking up Computer Engineering at HBKU. For Heba, she started skateboarding at age 11. “But it was mostly cruising around,” said Heba, who described herself as “a tinkering teacher by day and a photographer throughout.” On a fine October morning, we tagged along with these two Qatari ladies and strolled around Doha to search for the best skating spots, and what better way to do this than with the 2017 World Car Award Winner Jaguar F-PACE!
XTORK MAGAZINE: Why do you like skateboarding?
TALA: With skateboarding, I realized that I am only one practice away from becoming better. We often see accomplishments that look very far and beyond our reach; skateboarding tricks do look difficult at times, as well. However, the thrill and the acknowledgment that a certain trick is possible to conquer is what I love about skateboarding.
HEBA: I love that there’s really no limit to skateboarding. No matter how old you are, whatever your background or experience, you can always hop on a skateboard and ride out feeling like you’re on top of the world. Every new trick
learned just pushes you to move on to the next trick, and possibilities are endless!
