For the adventure hungry, Qatar’s desert sand dunes make for the closest thing to a quad roller coaster as you can get. While it is potentially dangerous, desert biking can be the cherry—if not the entrée—of your upcoming off-road
excursions. Local quad rider, Hassan Al Mansoori, tags us along a day in the dunes with his KTM 450 SX-F which we
effortlessly haul in the 2016 Chevrolet Silverado LTZ Z71.
Some may think that hopping onboard a quad bike and going for a spin
in the dunes is just as easy as taking your regular 4×4 car for a ride around the block. After all, both have four wheels. How hard could it be? “At times, even harder and more dangerous than a dirt bike,” Hassan says, “but as rewarding to learn as anything else extreme.” For 28-year-old Hassan, it all started about six years ago after a friend introduced him to ATVs. At which point in time, he was a recently retired professional football player. “After I stopped playing football, a lot of doors in the extreme sports world opened for me,” he shares.
Getting the Silverado out into the desert as a truck that easily handled an over 200 lbs. quad bike proves it to be a modern, amenity-packed multitasking machine. The LTZ Z71’s ride is undoubtedly smooth, and the cabin quiet with its 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 with Active Fuel Management engine. The 355hp @ 5600 rpm, 383 ln-ft. of torque @ 4100 rpm come as a standard. Its transmission is an eight-speed automatic, electronically controlled with overdrive and tow/haul mode that includes cruise grade braking and powertrain grade braking.
The LTZ Z71’s high-strength and rugged capabilities does not compromise safety and comfort. Tailgate and theft deterrent systems are also standards, keeping truck-owners at ease with valuables left in the car as they go on adventures. The ride has a remote vehicle starter system with an interior that is equipped with hands-free calling and music-streaming bluetooth capabilities. Plus, it is the first full-sized pickup to come with a charging pad to keep its driver wirelessly connected.
