For Goose, it all began 27 years ago when his dad bought him his first BMX. To say it became an obsession would be an understatement. As a 4 year old kid, he was always on that bike, hitting everything that resembled a jump. When not riding, he’d be found at libraries or magazine stores, catching up on the latest in BMX racing and freestyle.
BMX remained Goose’s ultimate passion thoughout his school years. By the time he reached college though, he was also in on the mountain bike scene in Cape Town. The city happens to be perfect for mountain biking and he counts himself fortunate to have experienced the varied landscapes – particularly downhill 0 that Cape Town offers.
His move to Doha in 2013 instigated his this passion: Longboarding. “I came across a longboard at the sports shop here,” he recalls. “It intrigued me to the point of purchasing one and giving it a try, and I was hooked after the first push! My motivation got higher the faster I went, setting and accomplishing challenges for myself.”
Goose has had a few nasty crashes in his riding career, including fractured wrists and collarbones and torn shins. Once he even knocked his head quite badly due to not wearing a helmet. “Have fun but be safe!”
Goose mostly practices on the weekends. He plans to continue riding and skating throughout his years, regardless of age.
“It would be awesome to see more skate/BMX parks dotted around the city with at least a safety fence around them, or better still in a warehouse with air-conditioning for the summer months,” suggested by Goose.
“Never give up, never lose your passion and keep practicing.” -Goose
